Costa Flying Service
Come Fly With Me! The southern finger lakes have a long history of pioneering aviation and aviators. New York's oldest flying service, Costa's was founded in 1930 by Joseph Costa Sr. born José Costa in Caniço on Madeira Island in 1909, he immigrated to the US with his parents became an American citizen and was known as Joe Costa. The first resident of Corning to obtain a pilot's license, he soon started offering passenger flights. Employed in the glass works during the winters and operating his flying business during the summer months Joe decided he needed to make his mark on the aviation world. A plan was made to fly solo across the atlantic to Portugal but with the onset of the Spanish civil war the US state department would not allow it. Joe then found out about a cash prize for making a flight to Rio De Janeiro Brazil and decided to attempt that and then make the flight to Portugal from Brazil. Costa’s plan was as daring as it was expensive and quickly became a community effort to raise the funds necessary. By 1936 his aircraft the “Crystal City” was ready to head out with the help of his friends. Learn about Joe's attempt at a solo transatlantic flight, and take a scenic ride yourself over our beautiful countryside rich with aviation history.
